This elegant executive pen writes incredibly smoothly and makes a wonderful gift. The cap screws off and can screw on to the opposite side of the pen. It will sit in your hands very nicely and is very well balanced. The bottom of the pen where it is held between the fingers is a little thinner than the rest of the pen for that easier grip. The Black Cherry Wood Burl has been Stabilized the correct way. This means the the Black Cherry went through a several day heating process aimed at cooking off all moisture inside the wood, followed by time spent in a vacuum chamber to pull out any air molecules, then resin is infused into the wood with the help of a pressure pot for several hours. These steps are done multiple times in order to ensure the resin has completely saturated the Burl. Once they have been completely saturated with the resin, the Burl is heated again to allow the resin to cure.
Stabilization ensures two things:
1. EXTREMELY long life. The wood is now MUCH tougher. It is no longer just a wood burl, it is a wood burl infused with an extremely strong resin. It is no longer as fragile as a normal burl would be.
2. NO WOOD MOVEMENT. With the change of seasons, even with the most durable of finishes, there will still be wood movement due to humidity changes in the air. This causes stress in the wood which could cause the wood to split or even break apart. Don't get me wrong, Our pens go through extensive, detailed steps to prevent this in order for them to last a lifetime, however Stabilization is the only way to completely eliminate breakage.
